A surprise from a dear friend

A small white envelope arrived in the mail today, with a note on the outside: “I just felt like it. ♥ Kir”

Inside, this beautiful and entirely unexpected drawing of David with a dragon nestled around his neck, tickling him gently under the chin.

The first piece of art that hung over David’s crib was a painting by a different artist of a baby dragon sliding down his parent’s tail. At his door is a painting by Kir of a dragon parade, and two of his (and our) favorite shirts have Kir’s dragon designs on them.

But the beauty of this piece goes beyond how well it captures a motif. It goes beyond the duality of the active laughing boy and the tender sleeping dragon. I became friends with Kir 30 years ago in college, and Kir and David only know each other through art and photos and stories we all share on the internet. Yet a small white envelope appeared today and blurred all distance. This drawing captures the power we have to reach others over the years and despite the many miles that may separate us. And that is a mighty power indeed.
