David’s surgery went very, very well. At his first post-op checkup, the surgeon described the surgery and David’s recovery as “great,” “excellent,” and “home run.” Less than 3 weeks after an all-day open abdominal surgery, David has no activity restrictions. His last Tylenol was 10 days ago. And his next post-op checkup can be 4 weeks from now instead of 3 weeks from now because he is so clearly doing well.
David is less happy about the post-op checkups. They are invasive and frightening, and will continue to be. So while we wanted to celebrate, David’s day was full of anger and misery and meltdowns. When told he could now ride his bike, he said he would never go outside again. He hated it when his classmates cheered him through the new obstacle course at preschool. Nothing we said could possibly be right.
But the surgeon is happy, and someday he will understand how much that matters. And someday we will get to celebrate.
