As it turns out, David’s first Shakespeare play was The Winter’s Tale. It was a lovely outdoor production in a local park, and David happily watched almost the entire first half, whispering secrets about the play to L, sometimes lolling on the picnic blanket and sometimes leaning against one of us. He decided to leave in the middle of the trial scene (Act III, Scene 2). That meant that he missed the bear; he really would have loved how the bear portrayed by five actors actually caught and ate Antigonus right in front of the audience in this production. Nevertheless, he was excited to return for the end of the play, fascinated by the actors pretending to be statues, and greatly enjoying the final dance.
A couple of hours later, we walked by and discovered that the evening performance had begun. David was all set to pass up on dinner and watch the show again. After a repeat viewing of a portion of Act I, Scene 2, the prospect of mac and cheese at the grocery store was finally enough to entice him away. Exeunt L and M, pursued by a preschooler.

David wanted to go back the next afternoon, so back we went. We rewatched from the middle of Act II through to near the end. The bear scene was appreciated, as expected, though the chocolate chip cookie at intermission was appreciated more.
