One small step for boy

David walked home from the playground today all on his own.

I know it’s not a big deal—we are literally next door to the playground. He often races ahead of us these days going back and forth between home and the playground, whether on foot or on his bicycle. If he is arriving at our steps while we’re still closing the park gate, does it matter whether we are going to follow or not?

But he knew it was a new freedom, and he took it seriously. He left L in the playground to come home for a snack. L watched from the playground, I watched from indoors, and we both saw those little teal and purple light-up sneakers turn into seven-league boots striding towards independence.
