Quotes from our little hedgehog

After being told that Oma and Opa will be leaving the next day to go back home, David got up, walked  over to them and hugged them, and said “Thank you two for visiting my house.”

“Eeyore eats brains.” For several days, David told us this each morning. What does Eeyore eat? Brains. Perhaps he heard that donkeys bray, and that sounded like brains. Perhaps he picked up on a zombie reference from weeks earlier. He has sometimes asked us where his brain is, and insisted that it is in his stomach or in his legs. I hope Eeyore is equally confused.

“Why is this night different from all other nights?” We practiced this for a month, with it slowly evolving from “Why this night is all different from other nights?” David said it perfectly at our seder this year. Several times, because he really wanted to participate as we went around the table taking turns reading from the haggadah.

With each new song that plays on the car radio, we hear from the back seat “What this song called?” Our new car often tells us song titles, so we can answer him accurately. When we’re in our old car, we have to make up an answer. When a new song comes on without prompting that question, we know he’s fallen asleep.

L went into David’s room one morning last week to find him looking through a book in his crib. “Mama, I can’t read the letters in this book. Can you help me read the letters?”

“What you want?” Ever since he spent some time playing in a toy food truck, he has been taking orders from us for food and bringing us our orders (or telling us that he’s out of whatever we’ve asked for).

“Actually” has preceded many of David’s conversational turns for months. If you take it as indicating that he’s constantly correcting you, it can be irritating. Actually, it’s his version of “um” as well as his way of letting you know that he has something to add.

“I am little hedgehog. You are Papa hedgehog, and Mama is Mama hedgehog.” We do not know why this is so important to him, but he tells us this frequently, and then wants us to call him little hedgehog.
