David did it again last night. He slept through the night (9 pm to 7 am). The first time was a week ago, and we were both so excited the next night to see if he would do it again that we didn’t sleep much. Oops.
We credit a book we read called Twelve Hours’ Sleep by Twelve Weeks Old. The tone is very sane and reassuring. The title is a little aspirational, since the twelve hours includes an evening feeding and bedtime routine at one end and getting ready for the morning feeding at the other end. So it’s really a maximum of eleven hours. But coming after a lifetime—his, not ours—of midnight and 3 a.m. bottles, ten or eleven hours straight is just fine.
David sleeps swaddled, and the way that he moves and stretches out all of his limbs in the morning when he is released from the swaddle is a delight to watch. It’s like a gentle extended cartoon of how to wake up.
Life is change, particularly at this age, so we don’t know how well this sleep pattern will last. But we are certainly going to cherish it while it does. And we’ll try to confine our excitement to our normal waking hours, using our infant son as a model.
