On February 13, David lost his fourth tooth. This one had been loose for several weeks, and finally came out during breakfast. David properly reminded us that we were responsible for exchanging the tooth for a toy, reminded us that it should be a small toy, and decided that the exchange could happen while he was at school.
On February 14, David’s whole class exchanged valentines. He came home with a small sack of tiny cards from drugstore bulk packs, shaky names written at the bottom, some with stickers or temporary tattoos or erasers or pencils attached. And one with a tiny container of homemade slime. We got him a warm pair of slippers which he was instantly attached to.
On February 16, David rode the bus to school. We always drive him to school, so this was only his second time taking the school bus. The kid next to him in the bus was reading a graphic novel out loud to all the kids in the front of the bus, which seemed to be a good replacement for the audiobook that David always wants to listen to on the way to school.
And on February 17, David’s uncle and grandmother brought him up to Maine for a 2-night visit without us. He helped with the packing and was eager to get on the road right after lunch, after a couple of goodbye hugs and kisses. We didn’t hear from him until he called us well past his normal bedtime to have us sing his bedtime songs, and he was clearly relaxed and happy to be having an adventure.
Now it’s very quiet in the house. We can watch the Olympics, finish our taxes, eat dinner at odd hours, and have entire conversations. School vacation week stretches out ahead of us all after David returns, but it will be fun to hear when he returns how life away has broadened his horizons.
