Learning to say names

Mama was first, followed only three days later by Papa. Tom and Elmo both emerged because of many readings of Thomas the Tank Engine and Sesame Street books, and Poppy is his favorite puppet. Last weekend he started saying Oma when Oma and Opa were visiting, and then he started identifying their beagle Flops in photos from Oma and Opa’s house. Yesterday brought us both Jeremy and Dobbie. He still won’t say David, but me and mine are the two loudest words he knows.

Like the emergence of other words, the order is somewhat mysterious. He only recently started saying ball, even though balls have been a constant presence in his life, a go-to activity, the first toy he ever chose for himself in a store, and even an early sign he knew (and possibly the first sign he forgot).
